Lysets kongerige

Nord-Norge er langt den største og mest øde del af det norske hovedland – faktisk mere end en tredjedel af hele Norge, hele vejen fra Helgeland til Nordkap.

Det nordligste Norge har været beboet i mange tusind år, hovedsagligt på grund af det relativt varme klima, de isfri havne samt de glimrende fiskemuligheder. I århundreder har fiskeriet været selve eksistensgrundlaget i dette område, og også i dag er her mange karakteristiske fiskerlejer med farverige træhuse beboet af fiskere og andre sømænd.

I gamle dage var store dele af Nord-Norge utilgængelig, men i dag sørger et stort netværk af veje og små lufthavne med rutefly for at forbinde de fleste byer og samfund med resten af verden. Hurtigruten anløber havne langs hele kysten mindst én gang om dagen, både nord- og sydgående.

Men regionen er ikke blot vild og uberørt natur og charmerende landsbyer. Tromsø, for eksempel, er en af Norges største byer – det er en livlig universitetsby med mange studerende og et stort kulturtilbud. Koncerter, shows, idrætsbegivenheder og en international filmfestival, alt sammen i et stort multikulturelt samfund med mere end 100 forskellige nationaliteter langt nord for polarcirklen. Samerne er det nordligste af de oprindelige europæiske folkeslag, og seværdighederne i Finnmark er alle mere eller mindre relaterede til den samiske historie, kulturarv og moderne livsførelse. Bevarelse af regionens natur, kultur og traditioner er topprioritet.

Lyset vil unægtelig spille en stor rolle i din oplevelse af det høje nord. Sommernætterne er lyse, og midt på sommeren nord for polarcirklen går solen ikke under horisonten. Vinternætterne, på den anden side, er lange og kolde, men slet ikke så mørke som du måske skulle tro. Nordlyset danser ofte over nattehimlen om vinteren, med tynde slør af røde, lilla, blå og grønne farvenuancer. Læs mere om nordlyset.

    Der er et væld af muligheder i Nord-Norge, uanset om du er til afslapning eller action, sjov i sneen eller golf under midnatssolen. Kajakpadling eller skiløb, vandring, cykling eller fiskeri? Prøv det hele eller se på de andre. Her er frit valg.

    Nord-Norge er årligt værter for verdensmesterskabet i torskefiskeri, men faktisk er her stille og fredligt hele året rundt. Gå en runde på verdens nordligste golfbane, se hvalerne boltre sig i havet, tag på vandretur i fjeldene eller fisk i havet i dit helt eget tempo.

    På Nordlandskysten kan du dykke i Saltstraumen, verdens stærkeste tidevandsstrøm, eller udforske den enestående natur på Lofoten og Vega-øerne. Når sneen falder, kan du tage skiene på – en afslappende langrendstur er lige så almindeligt som en adrenalinfyldt offpiste-tur.

    Her er også kulturtilbud, for eksempel et museum dedikeret til poetpræsten Petter Dass. Hovedattraktion er dog nok selve museumsbygningen, designet af Snøhetta. Handelsstationen Kjerringøy er et de vigtigste bygningsværker fra det 18. århundredes Norge, og området var inspiration for mange af Knut Hamsuns nobelprisvindende historier.

    Når det drejer sig om kunst, mad og beklædning, er den samiske livsmåde en vigtig del af Nord-Norge. I Sápmi Kulturpark kan du se hvordan samerne lever, smage på det samiske køkken ved den åbne ild, høre traditionelle sange (”joik” er en af Europas ældste overlevende musiktraditioner), og møde det samiske folk i deres farverige klædedragter.

    Nord-Norge er også stedet, hvor du kan finde nye madretter og ingredienser, som du aldrig har smagt på før. Havkat, helleflynder, rødfisk og kongekrabbe indtages jævnligt på disse kanter, og det samme gør andre fisk og skaldyr såsom søpindsvin og muslinger.

    Mere almindelige fiskearter som torsk, sej og sild spises her også i stor stil, sædvanligvis saltet, tørret eller dampet. Rensdyr avles også i regionen – det er en af grundpillerne i den samiske kultur.
